Snoring as a noise phenomenon is extraordinarily frequent. 60-80 % of men over 50 years old snore, and women also snore. This can become an annoying problem. Sometimes the loud snoring of a partner is intolerable.
One cause of the snoring is a slackening of the upper airways at the top of the throat. Within this field, the airways are kept open by musculature. When one is asleep, the muscle traction slackens. Snoring is produced when there is a vibration of the walls of the airways (the base of the tongue and the soft palate) as one breathes in and out. In the long run, snoring can be understood as a preliminary stage of disturbed respiration.
