Combining Orthodontic and Maxillofacial Therapy

As a goal of an orthodontic treatment, the perfect smile always stands apart from good function.

However, it is not possible to correct pronounced skeletal discrepancies with a tooth brace alone. If the lower jaw is too large or the upper jaw too small, the central face underdeveloped or the chin too prominent, we collaborate with a variety of mouth, jaw and face surgeons to address the patient's problems.

Course of Treatment

What is known as “combined orthodontic/jaw surgery treatment” entails pre-treatment with a fixed brace first, followed by one or more operations to surgically adjust the jaws.

The operations are performed under full anesthetic, with the patient remaining in the hospital another three days or so for further treatment. The fixed braces remain in the mouth during the operation and are minimally readujsted after the operation.

Improvement of Facial Aesthetics

Substantial improvements to the face profile and the tooth position can be achieved within a short time through surgery. The operation usually causes little or no pain.

Publicly insured patients
This treatment is paid for by the public insurance companies where a suitable orthodontic indication is documented. Coverage of extra services tends to be a sensitive issue, however.

Privately insured patients
The costs are covered by the private health insurance companies. However, we recommend that you submit our cost estimate for approval before beginning treatment.
